Interviewed by: Angela Courduff
WP: John, you impressed me the minute I met you. You have a lot of 'real' talent and I feel you will really make something of yourself in this industry. Being 20 years old, as your are now, you have such a great future. Now, can you tell our readers a little about yourself?
JC: Thank you, Tammy. I am a very easy going person, motivated, and honest. I enjoy having a good time, working hard to achieve my goals and spend time with my family and friends. I major in Hotel Management & Business. Fitness has become a passion & lifestyle.
WP: What was it that made you know without a doubt that you wanted to go into bodybuilding?
JC: I have always been into lifting since I was in High school. It wasn't the same feeling when I graduated. I wanted to improve my physique and change the way I looked from back then.
WP: How long have you been lifting? Also, what have you accomplished since you've been lifting?
JC: It's been a year since I've been lifting constantly. Throughout this year, I have accomplish a few good things. I gained a overall of 40 pounds, recieved 'Transformation of The Week' & I have a few more projects on the way.
WP: Wow! 40 pounds? That's awesome! What are your best lifts?
JC: I'd say my best lifts are bench, dead lift, incline & decline bench and leg press.
WP: Do you have any advice to people that wish to build more mass and more cut?
JC: My only advice to people is to push themselves to the limit. If you really want something you go and get it and achieve it. To gain more mass, I would recommend you to follow a diet plan, proteins, good intake of calories and you will be set. It's what I've done and it has worked.
WP: Great advice! I can remember my first Personal Trainer. "Five more reps! Come on!". My muscles were killing me and when he said 'five more reps', I liked to have died. But yes, one must push to the total limit. What do you eat in a normal day?
JC: I eat very healthy meals. My diet consists of good amount of chicken, fish, and eggs. I eat good carbs such as pasta, rice, and everyday I have my veggies.
WP: Do you allow yourself a cheat day?
JC: Yes, sometimes. The only time I allow myself to have a cheat day its' when I'm really craving something else like a "In N out Burger".
WP: I can remember the first time I heard about "In N out burger", I said, "What the heck is that?" Then, I came face to face to one. Ha-ha! I ate a bite of one and they are awesome. What supplements do you take?
JC: My current supplements are, superpump250 by Gaspari, Blue up by controlled Labs, Cyto Gainer & Serious Mass, which are my weight gainers.
WP: They must be working because you look awesome! Could you tell me a story of how you have gotten where you are today?
JC: Sure can! Let's begin by saying I was only 135 pounds. No muscle, no definition and super skinny. I was terrified on how I looked. I wanted to change my physique and live a healthy lifestyle. One day I said to myself, "I need to start going to the gym and transform my body." With the motivation of my friend Josh, I began to realize that as weeks and months went by, I started to gain some weight, and began learning more about the industry, supplements, techniques and simply what to do and what not to do while lifting. About 2-3 months afterwards, I started to see some results and saw that my body began to change. I realized I had gotten stronger and was lifting more than when I started. Eight month's have gone by and I am definitely satisfied with the way things are going. I gained overall 40 pounds of solid muscle & I currently weight 165 pounds with a 6.3 % body fat. I'm benching about 260 and I have gotten a good definition all around my body.
WP: Sure makes you want to do more, doesn't it? It's amazing where you have been and where you are now. I am so proud of you! Do you have anyone you can thank for helping you get where you are?
JC: My friend, Josh. He pushed me very, very hard when I first started to work out. I also thank my parents for getting my first gym membership at that time because now, it's not a hobby; its a LIFESTYLE.
WP: It's great to have friends that push you. Real friends help you reach goals. Where do you want to be in 5 years?
JC: In 5 years, I see myself working at a well known hotel chain with my business major on the side. I want to live in Dubai and work there for a few years. It's an amazing place filled of huge opportunities. But overall, I want to achieve my dream on my schooling and on the fitness side, getting ads for magazines and keep inspiring others with my story.
WP: Magazine ads, huh? Interesting! Hummm... You have worked very hard on your physique, made a lot of changes and have came a long way. You look great! How do you keep the physique you have? What is the hardest thing for you to face when it comes to keeping your physique?
JC: Thank you, I just eat very healthy in general. I maintain myself by doing cardio twice a week and training hard every day I step into the gym
WP: Tell me about your future projects. Have any in sight?
JC: I want to compete in a year or so, depending on how my body looks and how I feel with it. I want to get fitness ads, inspire others. I want to be sponsored in the fitness industry and help others in general with anything they need.
WP: What gets you up in the morning?
JC: Everyday is a new day, filled of joy and things to do. I get up with my head up high and with a positive attitude that it's going to be a good day and I'm ready for what ever comes my way.
WP: How do you approach a challenge?
JC: I've been in a few hard challenges, lets just say school is a challenge and thats one of them. Challenges only make me stronger as a person, not physically but mentally.
WP: Well said. How do you create balance in your life?
JC: I create balance by putting my priorities first. My first priorities are school, getting my school work done, and train hard. Time management is key for success, in order to be successful you need to have a balance on what you need to do.
WP: I love to ask this question because of the many difference responses I receive. Through your expierence, what one piece of advice you can share with me on how to gain the most muscle the fastest?
JC: The way I gained 40 pounds of solid muscle was eating right. I allowed myself a cheat food but, that won't give you what you need. My weight gainers helped me a lot but in order to keep in shape and not turn it into fat, you need to have a balance on how many carbs, calories, proteins you are consuming. Avoiding sugar will also help.
WP: Who had the most impact on you growing up?
JC: I'd say my parents. They are my biggest impact. My mom and dad are my heroes they have accomplish a lot as well. Seeing them success and have that drive to their passion, makes me want to work as hard to and have them proud of my work ethic and achievements.
WP: What is your work out regimen?
JC: I have a really strong work out regimen which requires a lot of time and dedication. I work out from Monday to friday. I'm usually at the gym about 2 and half hours or more. I usually focus in one part of the body each day of the week, and every month I change my routines to shock my muscles.
WP: Have you played in sports before?
JC: I was the kid that always liked to play all sort of different sports that I was interested in. I was part of the baseball, football, track and swimming team. I did karate for 12 years and I achieved my Black Belt when I was 13 years old. I would like to get back into the art of Karate.
WP:Now, your talking! You mentioned Martial Arts! My ears perked up! I love Martial Arts! If you've done it for that long, you should get back into it. Anything you would like to see change in the bodybuilding world?
JC: I think the bodybuilding world it's running smooth as it is. I'd like to see more natural competitors out there. It would make things more challenging and fun for the athlete.
WP: That exact answer is what I've been getting when I ask that question. For the past several months, everyone I've interviewed has said that. Maybe there will some major changing one day soon. Any shout outs?
JC: I could use this to all the people who supports me on Bodyspace. They are all great supporters and motivators!
WP: I hear Bodyspace is a great place. Everyone is talking about Bodyspace. I get so many athletes and people send me their Bodyspace pages for their updates. What Bodyspace is doing for people in this industry is so great! What is the funniest story that has happened to you while working out?
JC: It's not the funniest story but, it sure hurt a lot and I ended up laughing. It was leg day and my legs, for once, were feeling nice and strong. I had 6 plates up and was ready to get my work out in. As soon as I'm going to hop on the machine, I hit my shin right in a metal bar! WOW!!!! Let me tell you, I was in pain and started laughing.
WP: Ouch! That had to hurt! Before I started laughing, I would have to be sure you were okay. If you were okay, I'd be laughing so hard. I can just imagine what your face looked like at that moment! Your face would replay over and over and I'd laugh every time. Ha-ha! What is the proudest moment of your life?
JC: I have one proud moment outside of the bodybuilding world that I can recall and it made an impact in my life. For example, winning the Karate World Championship in Denver Colarado in my weight division class. I did not lose one fight & my record still up till this day.
WP: What?! You won a Championship and you got out of karate? That's hard to believe. Sounds like you would be able to use your talent in karate. Why waste that talent? It's not easy to win Championships! Not at all! What are your interests outside of bodybuilding and karate?
JC: I love going to the beach and getting some sun. I also enjoy going to the movies, relaxing at the house and spending some time with my family.
WP: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
JC: I'd say I am really impatient when I want something. If I don't get it right away, I get all cranky and want to get it ASAP. So, I'd say to be more patient about things and give it time.
WP: So, do you stump your feet and whine, too? Sorry, please be patient with me. I'm trying to be good. Ha-ha! That is so cute about you. Is there anything else you would like to add? Now is the time!
JC: Overall, it's been a fun journey. I love seeing progress and hearing that I have inspired others with my work ethic. I plan on achieving the rest of my goals and work hard for my new upcoming projects in the fitness industry.
WP: Well, you have truly inspired me! Also, have impressed me. You have been a pleasure to interview! Thank you for your time and good luck in your future bodybuilding endeavors!
JC: Thank you, Tammy. The pleasure is mine.
WP: What did you just call me? Tammy? What happened to, "Eye Candy"? Geez, get you in an interview and you change on me! Ha-ha! Sorry, I just had to say that.
