Interview With Sean Casten

Mr. World Physique, January 2009

Interview by: Tammy Renee'

WP: I am so happy to be interviewing you! It's great to be here with you. I am honored that you just won our January Male Modeling Contest! How does it make you feel?

SC: I am excited! I submitted my entry to get exposure, but winning makes it even better.

WP: That was a very exciting contest! So many people gets involved in them and it's so much fun to watch. You did a great job! What other contests have you won like this?

SC: This is the first modeling contest that I have joined.

WP: First one!? Wow! And you won it! So, Mr. World Physique, tell our readers and your fans more about yourself. So many people wants to know more about you.

SC: Well, I am 32 years old, 5’9” and 235 pounds. I have been lifting weights to add muscle for about 10 years. I was your typical skinny kid at a whopping 145 pounds when I got started.

WP: You are so huge now to be a skinny guy! So, you are proof it can be done! How long have you been in the fitness industry?

SC: I have been involved professionally in the fitness industry for about 7 years now.

WP: What made you decide to get into the fitness industry?

SC: I was into martial arts since I was a tiny little guy of around 5 years old. As I got older, I saw the changes that training and martial arts instruction could have on an individual, mentally and physically.

WP: I also do martial arts and it does make a huge change in my confidence level, my personality, and my mental ability. So, I feel you! It was the best thing I've ever done for myself. You are also a Personal Trainer. What are your certifications?

SC: I am certified by AAAI/ISMA and NESTA. I also have studied nutrition and have a Nutrition Certification.

WP: Great credits. What do you feel sets you apart from all other personal trainers out there?

SC: The biggest thing that sets any trainer apart is their personality. My personality allows my clients to feel at home with me. My clients tend to have a friendship-type relationship with me as I help them through their journey to health and wellness.

WP: Yes! So true! A bad personality will destroy a Personal Trainer business. Where do you train your clients? Do you train them in a gym, at home, or where?

SC: I currently train in Fort Collins, CO at The Zone Health and Fitness. I also do some in-home training and have a few clients that I do online consulting with.

WP: I will get more information from you later in this interview about how people can reach you if they are interested in your services, if you don't mind.

SC: Sure! I don't mind at all.

WP: Great! How much time per day do you typically spend with a client?

SC: Each client varies, but I never spend less than an hour with any given client. However, I also spend time preparing meal plans and routines before and after I meet with them.

WP: How many days do you suggest your clients to work out in a week?

SC: That is an individual thing. It all depends on goals. Workouts can be anywhere from 3-5 days a week.

WP: You are such an outgoing person. I want to know what gets you up in the morning.

SC: Knowing that someone is waiting for me at the gym gets me up in the morning. Ha-ha! Seriously though, it's hard to start the day at 5 a.m., no matter what anyone tells you. Knowing that I am getting up to help somebody achieve their goals helps a lot. Oh, and an occasional energy drink.

WP: Ha-ha! Great answer! I adore getting up early in the morning because it makes me feel so good. I get a little time to walk in peace, sit outside a bit and listen to the birds sing, etc. But, I do run down quickly in the evening time. I'm asleep when most of my friends are just now getting home. Ha-ha! Being a Personal Trainer, you're always having to motivate your clients. What is it that motivates you?

SC: Watching my body constantly making changes and improving is what motivates me.

WP: That will do it, for sure! What forms of exercise do you find to be the most effective for the following:

To gain mass:

SC: Heavy compound movements.

WP: To lose weight:

SC: Circuit style training and cardio.

WP: To cut:

SC: This is all in the diet. I am a firm believer in training heavy to maintain muscle fullness.

WP: Before competition:

SC: For me, competition training should not vary from your regular routine if you want to stay hard and muscular. You just alter your diet and continue to strive to lift heavier on each and every workout. Adding cardio is a definite must though.

WP: Thank you for all of the advice. Outstanding answers. So, now let's change this interview up a bit. You are not just a Personal Trainer, you are also a model. Can you tell me what you have done with your modeling thus far?

SC: I dabble a bit in it. I have mostly done free shoots. I did extra work as an 'evil ninja' years ago when I was a skinny little guy in 3 Ninjas High Noon At Mega Mountain.

WP: Who have you worked with?

SC: So far, I have worked with Thomas Bol and also Jebka Photography out here in Colorado.

 WP: What are you goals?

SC: I would love to go to the store and buy a package of underwear with my picture on it. Ha-ha! I just want to have fun, and if I can make some money and see the world, all the better!

WP: Now, when that happens, let me know. I'd love to see that! Ha-ha! How does your training differ when you are modeling and when you are not?

SC: If I know I have a shoot coming up, I follow a modified contest diet so I can lean up a bit and shed some water to bring out those six pack abs.

WP: What future projects do you have planned?

SC: Nothing planned as of yet, so if anyone reads this and wants a fresh face to mold. Feel free to contact me!

WP: Do you also compete? If so, what titles have you won. What competitions have you entered and what place did you take?

SC: The last show I competed in was Colorado State 2004. I had a real tough class as a light heavy. I placed 7th out of 15, with the top 5 being previous national qualifiers. I haven’t competed since due to personal issues in my life, but I am planning on the Colorado State this year, as long as this quad tear heals in time.

WP: Don't push yourself unless you are sure! How does your routine and life changes when you go from pre-contest to off season?

SC: My routine doesn’t change much. Diet is the biggest thing to change. Off season still needs to be 80% clean, but you get your cheat days that make life a whole lot easier.

WP: What do you like and dislike about competing?

SC: What I like is the competition honestly. Knowing if you don’t do that last rep your opponents probably did.

What I dislike is that during the 12 week diet phase you have to become very self involved. You have to schedule everything around eating and training, which makes family life very difficult

WP: What would you change about the judges in the competitions?

SC: I feel they should make them more consistent from show to show. You never know if they are rewarding size or lean in any given show, ideally you have both. But as we all know, you have to sacrifice some size to be lean.

WP: True! Great perspective! Are you NPC or IFBB?

SC: I compete in the NPC. Jeff Taylor is one hell of a guy.

WP: From your past contests, what have you learned you need to correct or work on for the physique you are aiming for?

SC: For me, it’s just more size. Lean is easy for me. I stay around 6-8% all year with genetics. I would like to step on stage a solid 225.

WP: "Lean is easy for me." Do you see fire coming from my eyes right now? Ha-ha! Just know you have someone that is very jealous of what you just said! Ha-ha! What are your strengths and weaknesses?

SC: Well, my arms have always been a weaker body part. They don’t grow as fast. My legs are my strength. I just think about squatting and they grow.

WP: But, your arms are massive! What problems have you had as far as staying motivated and disciplined to stick with your workouts?

SC: I haven’t had any problems other than personal issues getting in the way. I went through a divorce and the stress of that cost me a bunch of muscle. But, I have been back on track and ready to get back on stage.

WP: What problems did you have to overcome in order to stay on track with your fitness program?

SC: Right now, I have a partial tear in my quad. Overcoming that is going to be key in making my goals.

WP: Tell me something about yourself that no one else knows. It’s just between us, no one else will know. Ha-ha!

SC: I look like a scary guy, but I am really quite the opposite. I would rather be laying at home cuddled up in bed watching movies then anything else.

WP: Awwww, you're a big teddy bear! How have you changed over the years?

SC: I got a little less high strung. I have become extremely mellow. I think having kids makes you that way. Any time I feel like going crazy, I think to myself, "Self, how is that going to look to my babies?".

WP: I wished everyone thought like you did because there would be a lot less violence in this world! Any shout outs?

SC: Of course. The Zone Health and Fitness, Z's Training gym, Trueprotein.com, Diane from Team BioHazard USA, my babies, and everyone else who I’ve known along the way.

WP: Explain your workouts to me.

SC: I currently have been using DC Training. Thanks Dante! I have been strictly training this way for over a year and a half and have become stronger with a more dense physique.

I also coach MMA so that keeps my cardio going.

WP: What is your diet?

SC: I get about 450g Protein a day and about the same in carbs. Fats fall where they may. Ha-ha! This will all change come 12 weeks out from the Colorado State.

WP: Ha-ha! That answer caught me off guard! How freakin' funny! Who had the most impact on you in your life thus far?

SC: By far, my children. They are my sanity and reason to move through the hard times.

WP: You are proving, once again, to be a big 'ole teddy bear! That one just touched my heart! I love to ask this question because it's so much fun to hear the reactions. What were you like in high school?

SC: I was a skinny little skateboarder. That about says it all, doesn’t it?

WP: You have me rolling on the floor! Oh, that's cute! I can't see you like that. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?

SC: I get up and eat, shower, head to the gym and eat, train a client, eat, get my workout in, eat, train, eat, train, eat, get a hour nap or so, eat, train, eat, then go do security work til 3 a.m. (oh, and eat while I am there at least twice).

I am VERY busy. I have to try and pay my bills to keep things comfortable for my children. So, I mostly spend the day eating and working.

WP: The life of a bodybuilder! Eat, train, pay bills, and sleep! What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

SC: I love movies. This has to be by far my favorite pastime. I like action and horror the most. I will watch sad movies but, I have to watch an upbeat movie after, because I don’t like to be left sad.

WP: A bodybuilder with emotions! Yelp, teddy bear invasion! What type of music do you listen to?

SC: Anything but country for me. Never been into country unless you play it backwards so you get your dog back, your car back, and your girl back. Ha-ha.

WP: OMG! I know you didn't just say that! I don't like country either. I always tell people that I don't listen to it because it's more like, "I'm all alone, my wife left me and took my dog. Sure do miss my dog!" How funny! You've mentioned your kids a lot in this interview, can you tell me about them?

SC: I have 3. They are all turning a year older in February and March so, I will give their soon-to-be ages.

Elisia is 9 - She wants to be a singer and model when she grows up.

Lee is 7 - He wants to grow up to fight in the cage like dad. And, he already has a 6 pack.

Caterina is 5 - She likes to sing but, right now, she likes being my 'lil helper. She helped me while I was on crutches. I see the medical field in her future.

WP: I've never had anyone touch me so much in an interview. They sound so precious and you are such a proud dad. There needs to be more dads like you out there. What supplements do you take and why?

SC: Protein from trueprotein.com because I need a lot of protein in my diet. I also take Multi-vitamins and I am a fan of Species849 at teambiohazard-usa.com This is a Creatine with added ingredients for absorption that I love. Their protein tastes awesome, too.

WP: I use True Protein myself. It is good! Now, earlier I stated that I would get more information from you about your Personal Training and if someone was interested in using you, we'd give them more information. Don't you have an online Personal Training website where people can go to it and get Personal Training without leaving their home?

SC: Yes, I do have an online personal training website. You can go to www.castentraining.com to see what I’ve been up to or contact me for any questions.

WP: Not only that, they could subscribe for you to personally train them. With this interview, it clearly proves you know what you are doing and it shows your worth in this industry. So, I personally recommend people to consider you and contact you. What are your future projects?

SC: I am currently training a woman for a figure contest in May. I also have a guy I am training in MMA, whom I am looking at turning Pro within the next year.

For myself, I want to continue to improve upon myself and make champions.

WP: What accomplishments have you achieved thus far in your life that you are proud of?

SC: Taking myself from skinny to muscular is an achievement that I am most proud of. Also, raising 3 children that surprise me everyday with how good they are.

WP: Yes, I would say that is accomplishments! How would you like to improve, if any?

SC: I would like to work less for more money. Ha-ha! That way ,I could spend more time with my loved ones.

WP: Ahhhh, the american dream! Ha-ha! How can someone get in touch with you? Don't give me any phone numbers because, there are a lot of freaks out there.

SC: Nothing wrong with freaks. Ha-ha!

WP: Well, since you put it that way...you're right! Ha-ha! You kinky devil, you! Ha-ha!

SC: Ha-ha! You can get in touch with me on my website which is castentraining.com or you can email me at HERE. And of course, I have a myspace. You can add me at myspace.com/castentraining.

WP: Anything you would like to mention before we close?

SC: I would like to say thanks for giving me the opportunity to be part of the World Physique community. I look forward to helping as many people as I can and maybe even work with a few photographers or any other company that would like to be represented by a hard working and dedicated person.

WP: It is all of my pleasure, Sean. We are posting a lot of model calls such as swim suit issue shoots and photo shoots. We're getting ready to launch the magazine so, I am really excited. I hope you do decide to work with some of our photographers on there. It will be an experience for the both of you and we get to promote you at the same time.

I have really enjoyed interviewing you. You kept me on my toes the entire time. You are a hoot!
